Delamere Toy Library originally known as Delamere Toy and Tape Library is an independent charity which was established in 1981 by a group of parents specifically to benefit their disabled children. Their aim was to provide play opportunities in a supportive environment plus stimulating and enjoyable quality toys and equipment which they felt would benefit their child’s development. The parents were offered a storage cupboard within Delamere Special School which they gratefully accepted and used for some time. From there the Toy Library grew and the parents were then offered the school entrance hall. They were then given a spare room but lost this when the school required an official medical room. Through a lot of hard work and determination by previous committee members the Toy Library then acquired three Porta cabins which were placed in the school playground. The Toy Library had many happy years there but when the roof started leaking creating an indoor water feature it was time for the toy library to look for a new home. Again, thanks to a lot of hard work by our volunteer committee members and thanks to a newly formed partnership with Trafford Borough Council we acquired the school’s empty caretaker’s house and transformed it into ‘The Toy House’ where we have been since 2001. In 2002 we also went into partnership with SureStart. Originally established for disabled children Delamere Toy Library now offers an inclusive service and welcomes members from Trafford’s diverse community.
